My Topic for my unit plan is proportions in geometry.
Proportions are used in geometry to show similarity between shapes.
My essential question is: How are proportions connected to our world.
My unit questions are: How is similarity the same and different
How do we use proprtions in the real world
Can you name a job where proprtions are used regularly
My content questions are: Can you solve a proportion
Is perimeter propotional to the sides of two shapes
How can we show two shapes are similar
What is similarity

Proportions seem so easy to me but are so difficult for my kids. I spent almost 2 weeks working on proportions with my accelerated kids and I still don't think they "get it." Of course, they are only 6th graders and really have very little background in multiplication, etc. - or so they say! I would be very interested to see what jobs your students name as using proportions.

One thing that is helpful is to avoid using the same words in your essential, unit, and content questions. While “proportion” is a big idea word, it also has a specific mathematical meaning. Other big idea words that you are hinting at is being interconnected, relationships, or truth. So a suggested essential question is:

Depending on your focus, another thought might be:
How do you know it’s true?
These open up many approaches from a variety of subjects. Thanks.
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to comment on your actual last blog entry necissarily or what was supposed to be our last entry. Math is not my favorite subject, but I'll see what I can do. I like your essential questions because they apply to real life situations and you are trying to show how these math concepts can be applied in actual settings. Appealing to a student's future career is always a good way to get them a little more involved.
